I Believe in Prayer
We believe in Prayer
in the face of all things visible and invisible.
In the days of Lent I think Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
was consumed in prayer.
God was with Him,
and Jesus was living a life that manifested
that through God all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
Jesus prayed that He had come down from heaven,
and was the Holy Spirit, incarnate of the Virgin Mary.
He prayed these beliefs, because He had faith.
He had not yet been crucified under Pontius Pilate,
had not suffered death and had not yet been buried,
had not risen again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
Jesus prayed that He would come into heaven
and be seated at the right hand of his Father.
He prayed that in glory God
would judge the living and the dead
and His kingdom would have no end.
He prayed because He had faith in what He could not understand.
I do too, because we only know what we are given to know;
it is what we—Jesus, you, and I—believe:
So I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
I can only pray in faith,
because it passes all understanding,
more clearly felt in Lent.
Amen.
