Chapel on the Green

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Chapel on the Green

CHAPEL ON THE GREEN is a diverse group of housed and unhoused people who strive to celebrate and use God’s gifts to build up our community by practicing and proclaiming the radical and inclusive love of God. Join us every Sunday at 2pm on the New Haven Green for worship and a shared meal.

We are old and young people of all genders; from many different races and ethnicities; from many faith traditions and none at all; in sickness and in health; believers, doubters, and seekers; poor, rich, and on the edge; employed, unemployed, and under-employed; here by choice or chance. You are welcome here!

Volunteer with Us

Chapel on the Green wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of people like you! There are two ways to volunteer at Chapel on the Green: as a group, or as an individual.

  • Volunteer Groups: Sponsor a Sunday! We invite you, your congregation, or your organization to prepare and distribute a Sunday meal for around 100 members of our community. Please contact Lisa Levy, Outreach Coordinator, at cotg@trinitynewhaven.org with questions or to sign up. Available dates can be found here. We are grateful to you for considering  becoming a part of this important ministry!

  • Individual Volunteers: We’d love for you to join our core group of volunteers who support our community by helping with set up, worship, serving the meal, and clean up. Most importantly, our core volunteers become an essential part of our community. They get to know our parishioners and guests on an individual basis and provide a consistent presence of care and friendship. Please contact Lisa Levy, Outreach Coordinator, at cotg@trinitynewhaven.org with any questions.

What about rain and snow? It is our priority to gather outside whenever possible, to be fully accessible to people who are not comfortable inside a church building. When it is unsafe to gather outside, we usually gather just inside the church in the entryway called the Narthex.

Annual Events

We have a presence on the New Haven Green every Sunday at 2pm - rain, snow, or sunshine. There are also a number of other special days throughout the year when Chapel on the Green gathers:

  • Maundy Thursday Foot Washing - on the Thursday before Easter, we gather for a worship service and health fair (in partnership with Cornell Scott Hill Health Center) to wash our neighbor’s feet, as Jesus did with his disciples.

  • Chapel on the Green Birthday Celebration - we typically celebrate our anniversary with a festive gathering on the Sunday closest to All Saint’s Day (Nov. 1).

  • Homeless Persons’ Memorial Service - on or close to the winter solstice (Dec. 21), we host a prayer service remembering all those known to us who died in the previous year, and experiences homelessness during their life.
