"Spirit" | Reflection by Ellen Freiler
“Speak to Him, thou, for He hears, and Spirit
with Spirit can meet….”
— Alfred Tennyson, The Higher Pantheism
If you look up “spirit” in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, you will find no less than sixteen different definitions – fourteen nouns, and two verbs.
Sixteen. That’s a lot of ways to interpret “spirit.”
While many would describe a “spirit” as something either Holy, malevolent, or drinkable, my perspective is personal: I believe each of us has been given a worldly extension of God’s heavenly kingdom in the form of our own “guardian spirits” to serve as a comforting or supportive presence in our lives.
Guardian spirits have always been an active and integral part of my life. Over the years, my spirits have provided guidance, strength, hope, and moments of inspiration and awe – not to mention delivering me from a few “OMG!” near-misses that could only have been averted by the intervention of something/someone beyond this earthly plane.
Most importantly, the guardian spirits in my life have confirmed and sustained my confidence in life beyond life.
Reassurance and hope await those who reach out and connect to the God-provided gift of our spirits, both “guardian” and Holy. They are there anytime and anywhere; open your heart and mind to the manifestation of the Spirits in your daily life: “…for He hears, and Spirit with Spirit can meet…”. Engage with them on a regular basis, and you will experience a soul-support like no other.
