I Believe in Music

It’s often said that the phrase, “Those who sing, pray twice”  is attributed to St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo in the 4th century CE. Others have challenged that, saying that the phrase evolved from the lips of Martin Luther. Regardless of who said it first, there is truth behind the words. Music offers a very spiritual experience, and one what has lifted the essence and beauty of worship for centuries. One of the strengths of our worship in the Episcopal Church is the power that music provides, touching our very souls and moving our hearts beyond the words we sing. Still, not only is there a spiritual element to music, I believe there is a therapeutic quality as well. Through the power of music, people have experienced release, encouragement, and the drive to move on through hardships in life. The power of music - it is something for which I constantly give thanks to God, as I truly view it as the opportunity to pray twice.
