"Reckon" | Reflection by Micah Luce (Vestry Class of 2022)
I have long appreciated the word reckon. One definition for the Bible word reckon is “to consider something to be true.” Much is contained in this pivot point of our faith. Reckon relates to belief: God says something, and we trust as we reckon what God says is true. The Greek word is related to commercial transactions and accounting. Thus, to reckon does not mean that we do so on baseless ideas or whims. Accounts are reckoned on hard numbers. We reckon 1+1 to be 2 because that is how the numbers add up.
Look at one beautiful fact that we are to reckon, according to Romans 6.11: “Likewise, you all should reckon yourselves to certainly be dead to sin but alive to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
When reckoning that we are dead to sin but alive to God, it’s not because it is a neat idea that will help us get through the day: we can actually add up the transactional truths that God has, indeed, made us dead to sin and alive to God. How? “Through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The perfect life, sufferings, death, and resurrection of Jesus have made these facts true.
Prayer for today: Jesus, let the actual fact of your work on earth be the basis on which I reckon myself free from death and sin and alive to God as I go about my day. Amen.
